Ranked Player Spotlight – Fibonacci
Posted on 20 January 2016
Congratulations to Fibonacci for achieving the rank of #1 Legend for the month of December, the first points-giving season for the Hearthstone Championship Tour! This achievement is nothing new for the Control Warrior specialist, having earned #1 two other times last year and also getting two other top 10 finishes. His consistent Ranked Play finishes have earned him a reputation as a strong ladder player that’s a bit shrouded in mystery, having not played in many broadcasted online tournaments and not being a streamer.
Fibonacci usually likes to keep a low profile, but he graciously agreed to answer a few questions for us. It’s our pleasure to give you a bit of insight into his background and showcase the decks and strategies that Fibonacci used to climb to the top of the Ranked Play standings in December.
Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
I'm a 22-year-old math student from Canada and I just finished my undergrad.
How long have you been playing Hearthstone, and how did you get started?
I got a beta key in November 2013 and have been playing constructed since January 2014. I played arena until I could craft cards for Reynad's infamous Face Warrior deck. From there, I turned it into a control deck over time.
Does your BattleTag have any special meaning or significance? Why did you choose it?
It refers to the famous mathematical sequence named after Fibonacci. I don’t really remember why I chose it, but probably because I was taking classes related to it that semester.
You are well known as a prominent Ranked Play player, having been very successful in multiple seasons. How do you approach each season and what strategies do you use to climb your way to the top of the rankings?
During each season, I "scout" various metas, tech my deck accordingly and playtest. Based on that, if my deck has a decent win-rate against that specific meta, I will save it and use it on the last day of the season.
What decks did you use for the December Ranked Play season? Do you tweak them often during the season to adjust to the meta or do you stick with the same decks throughout?
In December, I used Control Warrior and Malygos Freeze Mage (70% Warrior / 30% Mage). I change my Warrior deck almost every day, but not so much my Mage deck because combo decks are hard to change due to limited flex slots.
Players know you as one of the strongest Control Warrior players in the world. Why did you choose Warrior to be your main class?
As I mentioned before, Reynad's Face Warrior deck was the cheapest deck I could craft when I started, so I went with Warrior.
Do you plan on playing in any upcoming tournaments? Will you focus on playing in more tournaments this year?
Yes, if I get invited to any, otherwise it is really hard to play in them unless you are an established player already.
What are your goals for Hearthstone this year?
Qualify into BlizzCon and start streaming.
Where can viewers find your stream?
You can find me at twitch.tv/fibonacci2016.
Is there any advice or thoughts you’d like to share to your fans or other aspiring competitive players?
If you want to get "good" at this game, you have to play a lot or get a coach or both.
Thank you Fibonacci for taking the time to speak with us and for anyone interested in watching him play, please toss him a follow on Twitch and look out for his upcoming streaming debut. Best of luck in the current season and the rest of the Hearthstone Championship Tour!
